Ebensburg WWTP Monthly Report - May 2024

Report Date: June 24, 2024 Prepared by: Luke Byrne, Project Manager

Executive Summary & Operations

During May 2024, the Ebensburg wastewater treatment plant treated a total of 20,883,700 gallons of wastewater (averaging 673,700 gallons per day). The facility's centrifuge operated twice a week on average, sending 19. 136 tons of dry sludge to the landfill.

The month was marked by significant mechanical challenges involving SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) air valve actuators:

  • SBR#1 Failure: The actuator for SBR#1 failed internally and was deemed unrepairable. Staff manually aerated the basin before taking it out of service for maintenance.
  • SBR#3 Failure: Shortly after, SBR#3's actuator began failing to close.
  • Resolution: To prevent a second basin upset, staff installed an expedited replacement actuator on SBR#3 on Friday, May 24th.
  • Future Plans: Remaining actuators are expected to be shipped on September 19, 2024, at which point they will be installed and SBR#1 will return to service.

Maintenance & Repairs:

  • WAS Pump: A broken impeller was discovered on the Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) pump and sent for repair.
  • Check Valve: Repairs were completed on the check valve in the wet well pump line.
  • Conduits: Staff worked with Dodson Electric to replace several broken conduits around the facility.
  • Sewer Lift Stations: Regular inspections occurred throughout the month. Notably, repairs at the Industrial Park lift station were completed on June 11, 2024. During these repairs, roughly 60,000 gallons of wastewater were pumped and hauled to the treatment facility. New pump flanges and slide rails were installed, and the wet well was thoroughly cleaned.
  • General Cleanup: Staff have been cleaning out the WWTP over several months, including hauling out a scrap metal dumpster and delivering a residual waste dumpster.
